The Philadelphia Eagles have work to do this offseason to be back in the mix for the Super Bowl in 2026. The biggest hole that needs to be filled comes at offensive coordinator after they relieved Kevin Patullo of his duties in that role.

Several candidates have been linked to the Eagles, including Mike McDaniel and Brian Daboll, per Dianna Russini of The Athletic. Despite this interest, the Eagles have "poked around" former Ole Miss offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr., according to Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News.

And if the Eagles decide to go down this path again, hiring an unproven coach to an extremely vital coordinator position, it will show that they haven't learned from their past mistakes.

Eagles Would Be Teetering on the Edge with Charlie Weis Jr. Hire

Weis Jr. is just 32 years old and has never coached in the NFL. He was the offensive coordinator for the Ole Miss Rebels from 2022 to 2025 before accepting the same role with Lane Kiffin's coaching staff at LSU.

Under Weis Jr.'s guidance, the Rebels' offense averaged 36.9 points per game, while leading the SEC in total offense (489.7), passing yards (313.3), and rushing touchdowns (36). They also ranked second in total offensive touchdowns (59). The Rebels were able to generate success, for sure, but the Eagles shouldn't go down this lane.

Philadelphia did the same thing with Patullo this past season, and we see how that panned out. The Eagles ranked 24th in total offense (311.2), 23rd in passing offense (194.3), 18th in rushing offense (116.9), and 20th in scoring offense (22.3). For the entire season, it seemed as though the offense was missing the type of juice and creativity it needed. And that rang true, as the Eagles were held to just 19 points in the loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

The Eagles also tried this before with Brian Johnson, who also had no prior NFL experience as a playcaller. He held the role for one season in 2023. Philadelphia parted ways with him before going to Kellen Moore, a young but proven offensive coordinator who had success with the Dallas Cowboys.

Philadelphia needs to find a coach who has proven the ability to be successful at this level. They did that with Vic Fangio on the defensive side of the ball, and it helped stabilize that unit.

They should take a similar approach with the offense and find a coach like a McDaniels or Daboll. Both men are more than qualified to be playcallers and would raise the floor for this offense. There's no telling what Weis Jr. could do in the NFL.

When the 2026 campaign rolls around, the pressure will be on this offense to find its form, as it did during the Super Bowl-winning season. A great deal of that will depend on the decision they make at OC, but they would be wise to steer clear of the unproven coach and pursue a seasoned vet instead.
