Eagles Backing Kevin Patullo for All the Wrong Reasons Amid Struggles

Despite the criticism, the Philadelphia Eagles still have Kevin Patullo's back.

The reigning Super Bowl champions are undefeated after two games; however, as it usually happens with the Philadelphia Eagles, the fans and the media don't seem to be too satisfied.

The Eagles have pulled off two big wins to start the season, but the offense has left plenty to be desired. New offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo hasn't gotten the players into a rhythm, and the play-calling has been way too predictable.

That's why head coach Nick Sirianni wanted to shut down all the outside noise once and for all. When asked about Patullo's work so far, the Eagles' boss had his assistant coach's back, even if the fan base feels differently.

Eagles HC Nick Sirianni is Standing by OC Kevin Patullo

"Just the knowledge of the players, the ability to have conversations, and the connection he has with those guys," Sirianni said, per The Athletic's Zach Berman. "Again, communication is so key because you're just constantly trying to work to get better, and he's got great open communication with all positions on offense."

Patullo was the Eagles' pass game coordinator and associate head coach before being the offensive coordinator, and Sirianni likes the sense of continuity the team has gotten with this promotion:

""I think you see it in situational football... That continuity in that aspect, knowing what the players do well, trying to emphasize what the players do well and finding a way to win, I guess what we've been able to do the last two weeks at times it hasn't looked pretty altogether, but we found a way to win.""

That makes sense to a degree, but it's pretty meaningless when it doesn't reflect on the field. Through two games, the Eagles have displayed one of the worst offenses in the entire league.

So far, they rank 29th out of 32 in total yards per game (266.5), 31st on passing yards per game (119), and are tied-16th on points per game (22.0). Granted, the Kansas City Chiefs have a championship-caliber defense, and they had that Super Bowl rematch marked in their calendars for months, but that doesn't change the fact that the Eagles' struggles are worrisome.

Saquon Barkley will always be Saquon Barkley, and not using him will be a disservice. But with A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith being little more than expensive decoys, it's hard to envision the Eagles being able to keep this winning streak going and repeat as Super Bowl champions.
