Eagles Announce Massive Britain Covey Injury News Before NFCCG
By Jovan Alford
The Philadelphia Eagles are one win away from going back to the Super Bowl for second time in the last three years as they will host the Washington Commanders in the NFC title game.
The Eagles enter Sunday’s championship game as 6.5-point favorites on FanDuel Sportsbook despite starting quarterback Jalen Hurts and rookie cornerback Quinyon Mitchell getting banged up in the divisional round.
The good news for Hurts and Mitchell is that they should play in the title game. Sticking on the injury front, the Eagles could be getting a huge boost in the special teams department ahead of Sunday’s highly-anticipated matchup.
Eagles News: Philadelphia Opens Britain Covey's 21-Day Practice Window
On Wednesday, the Eagles announced they opened up the 21-day practice window for wide receiver Britain Covey. In addition to that move, Philadelphia released defensive end KJ Henry from the practice squad, while signing tight end Nick Muse and offensive lineman Cameron Irving to the taxi squad.
The 27-year-old wide receiver/punt return specialist was placed on injured reserve late last month after originally suffering a neck injury against the Baltimore Ravens on Dec. 1.
Covey has had two injured reserve stints this season, which has limited him to five games. As a receiver, the third-year pro has seven receptions (eight targets) for 34 yards in limited snaps.
However, as a returner, Covey is averaging 7.7 yards per punt return on six returns this season. Last year, the former Utah receiver was one of the better punt returners in the league, recording 417 yards (first in the NFL).
Without Covey on punt return duties, the Eagles have turned that role over to rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean. DeJean has done well, juggling special teams and defensive duties. The rookie defender averaged 10 yards per punt return during the regular season.
