The beginning of Week 6 was not fun for Philadelphia Eagles fans, who saw their team get outplayed in all three phases of the game in a 34-17 loss to the New York Giants on Thursday night.
It was not the result Eagles fans were expecting, especially with the Giants coming off a 26-14 road loss to the New Orleans Saints in Week 5. However, no matter if it's Monday, Thursday, or Sunday, any team can be beaten, and Philadelphia found that out the hard way.
That said, the Eagles are still in first place in the NFC East (4-2) and got some great news on Sunday afternoon as they saw the Dallas Cowboys lose 30-27 to the Carolina Panthers. The Eagles aren’t likely putting much stock into the NFC East standings six weeks into the regular season, but anytime you can create some separation between you and another team, you’ll take it.
Eagles Watch Cowboys Lose Winnable Game to the Panthers in Week 6
The Cowboys entered Sunday’s game coming off their first road win in Week 5 against the New York Jets. Before their Week 5 win over the lowly Jets, Dallas dropped their first two road games to the Eagles and the Chicago Bears.
Coming into Sunday, Dallas understood that for them to win on Sunday, the main objective was to stop ex-Cowboys running back Rico Dowdle. Dowdle was one of the stars in Week 5 as he racked up 234 scrimmage yards and a rushing touchdown on 26 touches.
Therefore, you would expect that Dallas defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus would make some adjustments to make sure Dowdle wouldn’t have a repeat performance. Well, that didn’t happen, and Eagles fans enjoyed what they saw on Sunday, as Dowdle produced 239 scrimmage yards and a receiving touchdown on 34 touches.
It didn’t even matter what Cowboys QB Dak Prescott and WR George Pickens did offensively because Dallas’ defense fell flat on its face once again, which has become a common theme throughout the first six weeks of the season.
While Eagles fans know that Philadelphia has its own coordinator issues (Kevin Patullo), they will happily watch the Cowboys’ defense get ripped to shreds by another team. And if it results in a loss, that’s even better.
The Eagles hope they can get back into the win column next Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. At the same time, they’ll be checking in to see if Dallas once again finds a way to screw things up as they have to play the Washington Commanders.
