The Philadelphia Eagles have made a trio of trades ahead of finalizing the roster bringing in receiver John Metchie and backup quarterback Sam Howell. It is typical of a locked-in front office to use the final week of the preseason to bolster depth and make needed improvements. The latest trade brought back a familiar face with depth offensive lineman Fred Johnson reuniting with the Eagles after a short stint with the Jaguars.

It seems Philly wasn't pleased with its current depth options and wanted to turn back the clock to last season. Johnson started his Philly career as a practice squad player before winning the backup role the following year. It gave Johnson a chance to make a surprise appearance and make impact blocks to pave the way for Saquon Barkley to score twice. Johnson acquitted himself well and earned a chance at another backup role.

The Eagles weren't as pleased with the current options heading into the 2025 season and brought back Johnson in a surprise deal. It was perfect timing as the roster deadline closed in and Philly made final cuts. For the veteran tackle, this is the perfect upgrade after being stuck on an iffy Jacksonville roster.

Eagles Front Office Brings Back Familiar Depth Trading for Fred Johnson

Johnson reacted to the news, obviously excited, offering an excited "RUN IT BIKKKKEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!" in reaction to the news. It is hard to blame the depth lineman when you consider he just went from blocking for Trevor Lawrence to Jalen Hurts. While the backup is only going to be called upon when the franchise is dealing with an injury, it is still an exciting upgrade.

Not only did you get a far more talented quarterback, but you're also returning to a Super Bowl contender and a loaded offense that can offer far more support. The positive reaction to the trade is understandable, as Philadelphia is a clear upgrade in every meaningful way. For Taylor, this is a chance to continue an impressive underdog story and be important depth for a top contender.

The Eagles continuing to make moves throughout the final week of the preseason speaks to the quality of the organization. Philly could easily sit back as the defending champs and be content with its current roster. However, this isn't the way an aggressive front office is built, as they continue to seek out improvements and needed depth.
