As the offseason progresses, the number of QB opportunities across the NFL is starting to dry up as teams have their 90-man rosters almost set. Later this month, teams will begin OTAs, the next phase in the offseason playbook.
However, before we get to OTAs, all 32 NFL teams have spent the last two weekends hosting rookie minicamps for their incoming draft class, UDFAs, and invite/tryout players. Most teams like to have rookie QBs for their minicamps, but there are opportunities for “veteran” QBs to get a chance to work out in front of coaches to earn a spot on the 90-man roster.
A vet tryout wouldn’t be bad for a quarterback like Carson Wentz, who has been on four different teams since his last year with the Philadelphia Eagles (2020), since his market has been quiet this offseason.
That said, another former Eagles quarterback is getting a chance to showcase his talent this weekend at rookie minicamp.
On Friday, Mike Klis of 9News reported that the Denver Broncos brought in former Eagles quarterback Ian Book for a vet tryout during rookie minicamp. Book took Desmond Ridder’s place, who backed out of his tryout.
With QB Desmond Ridder backing out of his vet tryout, Broncos are bringing in former Notre Dame/Saints QB Ian Book for vet tryout during rookie minicamp.

Sean Payton selected Book in 4th round of 2021 draft for NO.
Book with Chiefs early and Eagles late last year. Not bad.
The 27-year-old Book joined the Eagles late in the 2024 season after the Kansas City Chiefs cut him ahead of the 53-man roster deadline in August. Book also had a stint with the Eagles in the preseason ahead of the 2023 season.
The former Notre Dame quarterback played no games with the Eagles last season, spending most of his time on the practice squad. However, he served as the team’s QB3 in the final few weeks of the season when Jalen Hurts was banged up and Philadelphia had to lean on Kenny Pickett and Tanner McKee.
Book doesn’t have the same football resume as Wentz, but his connection with Sean Payton, who drafted him in New Orleans, likely helped him get a call to come to the Broncos’ minicamp to throw the ball around.
It’s unclear if Book will be signed, but the fact that he’s getting an opportunity before Wentz, a former No. 2 overall pick, is quite telling at this point of the offseason.
