Earlier this offseason, the Philadelphia Eagles saw veteran running back Kenneth Gainwell leave in free agency and sign a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers. In fact, Gainwell wasn’t the only Eagle that signed with the Steelers in free agency, as standout cornerback Darius Slay also took a one-year deal.
However, it seems like the Philly to Pittsburgh pipeline is continuing to churn, as Gainwell will be reunited with another ex-Eagle in the backfield.
According to Jordan Schultz of FOX Sports, veteran running back Trey Sermon is signing a one-year deal with the Steelers.

The 26-year-old running back was one of four veterans who attended the Steelers' rookie minicamp this weekend.
Sermon spent the last two seasons with the Indianapolis Colts after the Eagles cut him in the preseason ahead of the 2023 season. The veteran running back had a chance to be coached again by Shane Steichen in Indianapolis, who was the Eagles' offensive coordinator in 2022.
Last season with the Colts, the former Ohio State running back recorded 159 yards and two touchdowns on 56 carries. He also saw some work in the passing game, tallying 16 receptions (19 targets) for 99 yards.
Sermon joined the Eagles in September 2022 after the San Francisco 49ers shockingly waived the former third-round pick after one season. The former Day 2 pick didn’t do much in his lone year with the 49ers (41 carries for 167 yards and a touchdown in nine games) and was placed on injured reserve later in his rookie season.
The Eagles took a flier on the ex-49ers running back, but he didn’t play much, recording 19 yards on two carries in two games. Sermon had a chance to make the team ahead of the 2023 season, where he had 105 yards on the ground and three touchdowns on 30 carries in three preseason games.
However, it wasn’t enough as the Eagles parted ways, but he was signed weeks later to the Colts' practice squad. Sermon now has another chance to prove himself and make the Steelers’ 53-man roster this summer.
