The Philadelphia Eagles not only lost 24-21 to the Dallas Cowboys, but appear to have lost rookie safety Andrew Mukuba for an extended time. The defender was carted off on Sunday, and based on the report from NBC Sports Philly's Dave Zangaro that he needed "a ton of help" getting to the locker room from the cart, things don't look good.
Already thin in the secondary and now staring down the potential of Sydney Brown starting crucial games (as underrated as Brown's impact has been this season), the Eagles need to take action quickly.
Eagles Secondary Injuries Open the Door for Signing Free Agent Safety Justin Simmons
Enter free agent safety Justin Simmons, who has already previously voiced interest in joining the defending champs. This doesn't come as a shock, considering Philly's defensive talent and the need for Simmons to breathe life back into his career. Simmons spent the 2024 season with the Atlanta Falcons and was underwhelming, evidenced by a 59.9 PFF rating. Still, Simmons put together an impressive career with the Denver Broncos and can't be worse than the current options.
Adding to this is the fact that Philly defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has experience with Simmons. He enjoyed three seasons as a starter in Denver while Fangio was the Broncos' head coach. This gives the Eagles an experienced veteran who not only improves their current depth but also offers a familiar fit with Fangio.
Considering how great the Jaelan Phillips reunion with Fangio has gone, it should only add steam to this idea. In truth, there is simply nothing to be lost here with Simmons needing to sign a bargain deal this deep into the season. This allows the Eagles to bring in the veteran and quickly pivot away if there is nothing left in the tank or better options present themselves.
To put it simply, there simply isn't anything but upside to the Eagles signing Simmons. Sydney Brown is the only clear answer if Philly is going to be without Mukuba for an extended time. Making it clear that Simmons should at least be brought in for a workout, finding out if the safety remains in shape, and if there is a potential fit.
