5 Phillies on Thin Ice This Offseason
By Jovan Alford
4. Austin Hays
Hays was supposed to give the Phillies a right-handed bat off the bench, who can platoon in the outfield and crush left-handed pitchers.
However, the veteran outfielder never got the chance to show what he could do. In the second half of the regular season, Hays was slowed down by multiple injuries (hamstring issue, kidney infection).
Most Phillies fans wanted Dombrowski to go after Brent Rooker, Luis Robert, or Jazz Chisholm at the trade deadline. But Dombrowski had other ideas. The former Baltimore Orioles outfielder hit .354 against southpaws this season, which is excellent.
But when called upon in the playoffs, Hays looked overmatched at the plate, going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. The veteran outfielder is arbitration-eligible and Spotrac has Hays’ estimate at $6.4 million.
The Phillies might not want to go that far with Hays, who was a solid addition on paper. But he might not be the answer to what they need off the bench.
