2. Jeff Hoffman

For as good as Hoffman was in the regular season for the Phillies en route to being named an All-Star, his performance in the NLDS left a bad lasting impression on fans.

The 31-year-old right-handed relief pitcher had a horrific 40.50 ERA in the playoffs, which isn’t what the Phillies or fans expected. Hoffman didn’t have his best stuff against the Mets, allowing six earned runs and two walks in three appearances.

The last time he allowed three earned runs in an appearance was in the second to last game of the regular season against the Washington Nationals. The veteran reliever gave up four earned runs, including a home run to Joey Gallo in the eighth inning.

He also had two strikeouts in the one inning of relief. Nonetheless, outside of his postseason issues, Hoffman was one of the best relievers in the National League this season. The veteran pitcher possessed a 2.17 ERA (career-best) and held opponents to a .197 batting average at the plate.

The All-Star reliever also showcased his versatility in the bullpen, recording 10 saves (three blown saves).

Hoffman is on thin ice because of his pending free agency. The Phils could have a ton of competition for Hoffman’s services, as he will be one of the best options this winter.

In a perfect world, the Phillies would want to re-sign him and possibly Carlos Estevez. They acquired Estevez before the trade deadline.

However, it’s unlikely both pitchers come back and if you’re the Phillies, you might be inclined to re-sign Hoffman, who has been one of your best weapons out of the bullpen over the last two years.
