5 Eagles Additions That Have Backfired Since 2023

The Philadelphia Eagles have made a few moves that haven't worked out since 2023.

2. Rashaad Penny

In March 2023, the Eagles decided to sign running back Rashaad Penny to a one-year deal that had a maximum value of $2.1 million.

It was believed that Penny and D'Andre Swift would form a dynamic duo in the backfield but that wasn't the case at all. The San Diego State product only logged 31 offensive snaps in 2023, notching 11 carries for 33 yards.

He was a complete non-factor in the Eagles backfield, as Swift took the majority of the reps. What made the move even more confusing was how Kenneth Gainwell played a nice chuck of plays (461).

Injuries negatively affected Penny's career before heading to Philly but once healthy, he was a productive playmaker. In five seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, Penny logged 1,918 rushing yards and 5.7 yards per carry. That just didn't seem to carry over into Philly.

3. Kevin Byard

The Eagles' secondary was a dumpster fire in 2023. They attempted to bring some stability to the unit when they traded for safety Kevin Byard in Oct. 2023. It was believed he would come through and fortify the backend but that wasn't what happened.

Byard didn't put out the best tape with the Eagles. Over 10 regular season games in Philly, he gave up 32 receptions (38 targets) for 321 yards, and two touchdowns. He also had a 106.4 passer rating allowed when in coverage per PFF. At times, he looked lost in coverage.

The Eagles gave up a fifth and sixth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, along with Terrell Edmunds for Byard. In hindsight, they were better off not making the move.
