3 Eagles on Thin Ice After Philadelphia’s Ugly Week 14 Win Over Panthers
By Jovan Alford
2. Avonte Maddox
The veteran cornerback has been a net negative on defense this season as he has a stellar 48.6 overall defensive grade on PFF. Maddox played 11 snaps in Sunday’s win over Carolina after safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson went out briefly.
He didn’t play much on defense but still had a 44.4 overall and a 45.4 coverage grade. But he did have one huge play in the Week 14 win as he did a great job downing Mann’s punt inside the five-yard line.
Maddox becoming one of the Eagles’ better special teams players will help down the stretch. However, Philly cannot afford any more injuries in the secondary as Maddox’s play has taken a huge step back.
The veteran defender played well in the slot for many years but hasn’t found that same groove this season. In limited snaps on defense, Maddox has recorded 15 combined tackles and five pass deflections.
Maddox’s advanced defensive coverage stats are surprisingly not bad, but he doesn’t see the field much on defense. The 28-year-old has a 47.4 completion percentage allowed on targets and a 76.2 pass rating allowed when targeted.
