The Philadelphia Eagles just wrapped up an incredible season that saw them win 14 games in the regular season and win Super Bowl 59 in emphatic fashion, defeating the Kansas City Chiefs, 40-22 at Caesars Superdome.
Eagles general manager Howie Roseman did an outstanding job this past offseason, building another Super Bowl roster after seeing how things went south in 2023.
Philadelphia doesn’t make it this far without Saquon Barkley, Zack Baun, Mehki Becton Sr., and C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who were signed as free agents. And then, when you look at the Eagles’ 2024 draft class, Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, and Jalyx Hunt all contributed in their first years, which is a great sign for the future.
With a new offseason on the horizon, Philadelphia will look to retool in hopes of making a second consecutive trip back to the Super Bowl. It won’t be easy as the league has improved and will continue to, meaning the Eagles must stay one step ahead of everyone else.
One way to retool the 53-man roster is through trade. The Eagles have a few players that they could look to move in the offseason for draft capital or replacements at those spots.
These players were major disappointments in 2024 and could use a change of scenery heading into next season.
1. Bryce Huff, EDGE
The Eagles made two splash moves this past offseason. The first was signing Barkley to a massive three-year, $37.75 million deal, which turned out to be one of, if not the best free agent moves in free agency.
The other was signing Bryce Huff to a three-year, $51.1 million contract, which did not work out in the Eagles’ favor. Thankfully, Philadelphia saw the emergence of young pass rushers Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt, who outplayed Huff.
The Eagles were banking on Huff to be the Haason Reddick replacement, but that never came to fruition. The 26-year-old defender dealt with injury and saw his snaps decrease dramatically.
Last season with the Jets, Huff had 33 quarterback hits, 21 quarterback hits, 10 tackles for loss, and 10 sacks as a rotational pass rusher.
This season with the Eagles, the former Jets EDGE had eight QB pressures, four QB hits, three tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks in 12 games (six starts). Huff didn’t record his first sack until Week 6 against the Cleveland Browns.
The veteran pass rusher was a non-factor in the playoffs as he saw one snap in the wild-card round against Green Bay, zero snaps against the Rams in the divisional round, and only 12 against Washington in the NFC title game.
However, the Eagles had blown out the Commanders 55-23, which made sense as to why Huff was in the game. But the veteran defensive lineman was made inactive for the Super Bowl, which was telling in its own right.
That said, if the Eagles want to trade Huff, this is the best time to do it as he only has a $7.5 million cap hit for 2025. He also has a $15.58 million roster bonus, which must be exercised by the start of the 2025 regular season.
The veteran defensive end has a $11.7 million cap hit in 2026 and a $14.635 million cap hit with similar stipulations.
Since he didn’t play well in his first year with the Eagles, Philadelphia might not get a ton back in return. Therefore, do not be surprised if the Eagles try to run it back for one more season with Huff.
