In a back-and-forth affair on Sunday, the Philadelphia Eagles needed everyone to make a play to hold off the Washington Commanders. Punt returner Britain Covey chose the perfect time to step up late in the fourth quarter, as his 20-yard pickup put Philly on its own 43 and in prime position to secure a last-minute score.

The Eagles eventually did just that, making Covey an underrated hero from the Week 4 win. However, some concerning injury news has emerged on the talented punt returner right after his efforts.

Eagles News: Britain Covey Injury Update

Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports Covey is in the NFL’s concussion protocol following the overtime victory. McLane said the head injury occurred “late” during the Eagles’ win, but it’s unclear when exactly he got his bell rung.

This news is certainly not what Philly needed right now. The team is already playing shorthanded as it is, with several starters and depth players either out or on the injured reserve list. That makes unexpected areas of playmaking, like the punt return game, even more impactful as the Eagles try to make up for their losses.

Roster health aside, Covey is also a legit PR talent. Over his first three games of the season, the Utah product racked up 113 yards on just six punt returns — including a 52-yard scamper in Week 3 that helped set up a field goal.

He was back at it again on Sunday with his game-changing play in the fourth quarter. If he decided to play it safe and simply focus on making the fair catch, Philadelphia would’ve started that pivotal drive on its own 23-yard line. Instead, Covey decided to have his best return of the day in that moment, and it was crucial to setting the Eagles up for the go-ahead touchdown.

Now the returner’s head injury puts a serious cloud over his availability for the upcoming game against the Los Angeles Rams. You have to go back to the middle of last season to find a player who cleared protocols in less than one week, which suggests Philadelphia will be without another key contributor on Sunday.
