The Phillies officially punched their ticket to the postseason on Tuesday, walking off the Pirates 3-2 to clinch a playoff berth.

On Wednesday, Philadelphia fans got more good news with an encouraging injury update on Rhys Hoskins.

Rhys Hoskins Injury Update

John Clark of NBC Sports reports that Hoskins may be able to return in time for the World Series if the Phillies win the pennant again.

Hoskins has missed the entire season so far with a torn ACL in his left knee, which he suffered during Spring Training. He wouldn’t be ready to play the field, according to manager Rob Thomson, but he could be available to DH or pinch-hit in the Fall Classic.

That would be a massive boost for Philadelphia, as Hoskins is one of the team’s best hitters when healthy. He batted .246/.332/.462 with 30 home runs, 33 doubles and 79 RBIs last year. He was also tremendous in the postseason, slugging 6 homers with 12 RBIs in 17 games last October. In fact, I’m pretty sure this bomb still hasn’t landed:

So yes, getting Hoskins back could be huge for us, even if it’s just in a limited capacity. His game-changing power could be the difference between winning it all and going home empty-handed.

What Hoskins is trying to do isn’t unprecedented, either. Back when he was with the Cubs, Kyle Schwarber tore his ACL and LCL in April 2016 and returned in time for the World Series, batting .412 against the Guardians and helping Chicago end its 108-year title drought.

Even if Hoskins is a bit rusty, just having his presence back in the lineup could be a huge lift. He’s a patient, disciplined hitter who forces pitchers to throw strikes, and pitchers would certainly have to respect his power.

I’m sure it’s been tough for Hoskins to be on the sidelines all season, and it will be even harder once the playoffs start. But there’s still time for him to make an impact on the 2023 Phillies, so hopefully he gets the chance.
