Bailey Falter Had Heartbreaking Reaction to Phillies’ Playoff-Clinching Win
By Tyler Maher
Man, it must really suck to be Bailey Falter right now.
It was bad enough the Phillies traded him to the Pirates this summer, sending him from a World Series contender to a team with no shot of making the playoffs.
To make matters worse, Philadelphia clinched a postseason spot with a 3-2 win over Pittsburgh on Tuesday, and Falter had a front-row seat.
Instead of celebrating with his former teammates on the field, Falter could only watch from the opposing dugout. To his credit, he stuck around long after the rest of the Pirates had retreated to the clubhouse.
Oof, talk about devastating.
The only thing that would’ve made this scene even more heartbreaking is if Falter had been the one who served up the walk-off homer to Brandon Marsh. Fortunately for him, he was on the bench when that happened.
Still, this has really gotta sting for Falter. He was drafted by the Phillies in 2016, debuted with them in 2021 and helped them reach the World Series last year. Unfortunately, he got off to a rough start this year and was traded to Pittsburgh at the trade deadline for utilityman Rodolfo Castro (who’s been terrible, by the way).
Things haven’t gotten any better for Falter, who still has an ERA over 5 and has been one of the worst pitchers in baseball this year. Philadelphia immediately took off after the trade (mostly because of Trea Turner), while the Pirates haven’t played a single meaningful game since he arrived.
If the Phillies go on to win the World Series without him, that would hurt even more. At least Falter would get a ring for being on the team, but it wouldn’t be the same.
