5 Studs (and 2 Duds) from Eagles’ Monday Night Football Blowout Win Over Buccaneers
Dud: Josh Jobe
I almost feel bad putting Josh Jobe here. It’s not really his fault — nobody really thought he was up to the task here, and he wasn’t exactly put in a position to succeed.
With Avonte Maddox out, the Eagles needed a new slot corner and Mario Goodrich was not that guy. So they tried shifting James Bradberry into the slot, which meant Josh Jobe was up as the outside corner in nickel sets.
That went awry immediately — the Bucs threw at Jobe on his first snap, and picked up a third-down conversion.
The Eagles then tried to get away from Jobe some, bringing Sydney Brown into the slot (allowing them to keep Bradberry outside), but then Brown and Justin Evans both left the game with injuries, removing all flexibility in the slot.
So then it was back to Jobe.
A second-year undrafted player seeing some of the first significant playing time of his career is just never going to stand a chance against Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, even if it’s Baker Mayfield throwing to them. But even covering other players wasn’t great for Jobe, as we saw when a pass interference on Cade Otton allowed another third-down conversion.
Baker picked on Jobe whenever he could, and it worked more often than not.
Was he in over his head thanks to circumstances outside of his control? For sure. But it was a dud performance none the less.
