3 Surprise Phillies Who Could Make the Postseason Roster
By Tyler Maher
3. Garrett Stubbs
At first glance, Stubbs isn’t an obvious choice for the postseason roster. He’s a 30-year-old backup catcher, after all, and his bat has been absolutely atrocious this year. In 38 games, he’s hitting a mere .196/.268/.255 with no home runs and more strikeouts (24) than hits (20).
If Stubbs played literally any other position, he wouldn’t be on this roster. But we need two catchers and someone to back up J.T. Realmuto, so Stubbs is the guy.
Besides, it’s not all bad with Stubbs. He’s a postseason regular at this point, making the playoffs in every year of his career so far. That includes three World Series trips as well (2019 Houston Astros, 2021 Astros, 2022 Phillies), so he’s pretty familiar with October baseball at this point.
While he’s been on the bench for most of those contests, he’s still comfortable with the postseason spotlight.
At the end of the day, we need an insurance policy in case Realmuto gets hurt or can’t play for some reason. Stubbs may not be an ideal option, but he’s not the worst, either. He’s just the best we have right now.
Hopefully he doesn’t have to come into too many games, but if he does, at least we have a guy who’s been here before.
