The Eagles’ backfield is a bit banged up heading into their Week 3 road matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Boston Scott exited last Thursday’s game with a concussion and is working through protocols, while Kenny Gainwell missed Week 2 with a rib injury.

Based on Philly’s recent running back signing, however, the team doesn’t appear too concerned with their injuries ahead of Week 3.

Eagles Running Back Injuries

According to NFL insider Aaron Wilson, the Eagles signed running back Bryant Koback to the practice squad on Wednesday as part of a flurry of roster moves. The team also put Avonte Maddox (pec) on the IR and promoted wide receiver Britain Covey from the practice squad.

Signing Koback — who has never played in the NFL — is actually a good sign for Philly, even though it may seem counterintuitive at first. By not signing someone more established with actual NFL experience, that implies the Eagles probably expect either Scott or Gainwell to play in Week 3, if not both. If they didn’t, they would have probably acquired someone more impactful.

In Scott’s case, he should benefit from the extra time off between Week 2 and Week 3. With Week 2’s game falling on a Thursday and Week 3’s game falling on a Monday, he gets a full 10 days off to recover from his concussion. While it can be tough for players to come back from a concussion the following week, they’re usually able to return after missing only one game max, so the extra few days of rest could be enough to activate him for Week 3.

As for Gainwell, he appears to be trending in the right direction after sitting out Week 2.

It also helps that D’Andre Swift has emerged as the top option in Philadelphia’s backfield following his monster Week 2 showing. That allows Scott and Gainwell to take on more complementary roles and rotate as needed, enabling them to be eased back into action.

The Eagles will look to improve to 3-0 against the Bucs, who also enter this matchup undefeated.
