3 Biggest Surprises of the Eagles’ 2023 Season So Far
By Isaiah De Los Santos
3. Jake Elliott’s deep-range success
One clear hero to thank for the Eagles’ 2-0 start is kicker Jake Elliott. Not only has he made essential kicks, but he’s killing it from long range in a way that he hasn’t before.
When the offense started slow in Week 1, Elliott stepped up to bail them out. He made four field goals against the Patriots, including a pair from 50-plus yards out, helping put some points on the board when Hurts and co. stalled out.
Then in a high-scoring matchup versus the Vikings, Elliott once again played a key part in the victory. His 61-yard make as the first half ended gave Philadelphia some serious momentum; it also tied the longest FG of his career, marking his best since he was a rookie in 2017.
It’s incredible to see Elliott cashing in from deep after not being a consistent big-leg threat for most of his Eagles tenure. After all, the University of Memphis product’s three makes from 50-plus yards have already tied his second most in any season, and we’re just two games in! He could obliterate his personal record of five 50-plus FG makes in the first half of this season alone, which no one was betting on this year.
