The Philadelphia Phillies community was rocked Saturday by the news of former manager Charlie Manuel suffering a stroke while undergoing a medical procedure. Though the hospital was able to removed a blood clot from Manuel quickly, the Phillies shared a statement that said the next 24 hours would be “crucial to his recovery.”

On Sunday, the organization provided some good news on the beloved former manager, via his family.

Manuel’s wife, Missy, says he has “made progress over the past 12 hours, and his doctors are encouraged.” She also also shared appreciation of fans and the Phillies’ well wishes, stating she thinks they’re helping with Manuel’s recovery.

This is undoubtedly some much-needed good news on Manuel. He has battled a number of health issues throughout the years, including suffering a heart attack and facing kidney cancer.

Despite this, however, Manuel has remained an active presence around the Phillies. He filled in as hitting coach for the rest of the 2019 season after the team John Mallee go, and Manuel currently owns the title of special adviser to the general manager. He’s frequently seen at the team’s spring training, Citizens Bank Park, or with one of the organization’s minor-league affiliates.

Manuel is not only praised for managerial talents, which helped the Phillies win the World Series in 2008, but for his overall presence. Kyle Schwarber called Manuel a “good human,” while manager Rob Thomson added “All of our guys, everybody in the organization, loves him.”

Hopefully Manuel can continue to make strides in his recovery and help cheer on the Phillies as they prepare for another postseason.
