5. DUD: Jalen Hurts

After Jalen Hurts’ middling start to the season in Week 1, fans were happy to chalk it up as a problem with new offensive coordinator Brian Johnson. We may have been wrong.

If you just look at the stats, it was an okay night for Jalen Hurts. Not a good one, but at least fine.

But if you watched the game, you know why he’s on this list.

You can even figure out just what kind of game he had with the stats alone if you like. Remember the big DeVonta Smith touchdown I talked about earlier? The one where Smith was completely open and Hurts just had to take the layup?

Well without that pass, Hurts would have posted just 130 yards on 22 pass attempts. Those 5.9 yards per attempt still would have been an upgrade from the 5.2 he posted in Week 1, but this is suddenly becoming a trend.

I’m not saying we need to ring the alarm bells and start calling for Marcus Mariota. We’re still 2-0. There’s still time for Hurts to bounce back. It’s a long season, and as long as he’s back in peak form by playoff time we’re going to be alright.

But “we don’t need to panic” isn’t exactly a roaring endorsement for his play either.

You hate to do this to our franchise QB in a win when we scored 34 points, but Hurts was firmly a dud on Thursday.
