As a sports fan, there’s nothing worse than watching players you used to root for suit up for your rivals. It just feels wrong, like a form of betrayal.

Eagles fans may want to cover their eyes, then, because one of their former quarterbacks is set to work out for the San Francisco 49ers this week.

Ian Book 49ers News

That would be Ian Book, who was competing for a QB job with Philadelphia during training camp. He ultimately didn’t survive roster cuts, however, losing out to Jalen Hurts, Marcus Mariota and Tanner McKee.

That’s a talented quarterback room, though, so there’s no shame in finishing behind those guys. Book just didn’t do enough during preseason action to beat them out, going 12-for-19 with 91 passing yards, 0 touchdowns and 3 sacks in two preseason games.

After getting released on roster cutdown day on Aug. 29, Book is still trying to keep his NFL career alive. The 25-year-old was a fourth-round pick out of Notre Dame in 2021 and appeared in his only NFL game that season with the New Orleans Saints. It did not go well, however, as he was picked off twice and sacked eight times during an absolutely disastrous NFL debut.

Book spent last year on the Eagles’ practice squad but didn’t see any game action. The 49ers are pretty set at quarterback with Brock Purdy, Sam Darnold and Brandon Allen, but Book could still earn a spot on their practice squad if he makes a good impression during his workout this week.

At this point, we can only wish him the best and hope he doesn’t come back to haunt us someday. San Francisco’s had pretty good luck with obscure quarterbacks lately, so hopefully he doesn’t become another Brock Purdy for them.
