Everyone knows the Philadelphia Eagles’ offense didn’t perform up to its standards in Week 1. Thankfully, the Eagles were able to avoid disaster against the New England Patriots thanks to kicker Jake Elliott.

The veteran’s four field goals ended up being the difference for Philly after Jalen Hurts and company stalled out in scoring position time after time versus New England.

Following Elliott’s big day, though, Hurts was brutally honest about his kicker.

Make no mistake, Hurts heaped praise on Elliott for his efforts on Sunday. He commended the Memphis product for his “big-time plays” throughout the Pats game, calling his performance “huge.”

Hurts got frank, however, about needing to lean on Elliott in Week 1. The star QB said “I don’t like him kicking” in between singing his praises.

If this seems like a mixed message from Hurts, it’s not. He means he doesn’t want to rely on Elliott to generate points via field goals, because the offense should be marching down the field and getting into the endzone.

It’s honestly no surprise Hurts, a fierce competitor whose fire is matched by very few players, isn’t happy with how he performed. He would’ve loved to develop a groove from the very start of the season, but instead he and the offense struggled, making this matchup much closer than most expected.

While Hurts and co. didn’t start off on the right foot, Elliott certainly did, which should give him a nice confidence boost to kick off the 2023 campaign. The veteran went 4-of-4 on FG attempts Sunday, recording makes from 32, 56, 48 and 51 yards out. His proficiency from 50-plus yards was especially notable, as Elliott notched just five total FGs from that range throughout the entire 2022 season.

There’s almost nowhere to go but up for the offense after their Week 1 showing. At the very least, we know Elliott is ready to pitch in if his number is called.
