Jalen Hurts Has Snarky Response to Patriots’ Draft Mistake
By Isaiah De Los Santos
Following an MVP-worthy season and trip to the Super Bowl, all eyes are on Jalen Hurts heading into the 2023 campaign. He’s gone from rising talent to bonafide superstar, proving to every team that passed on him in the 2020 draft that they made a mistake.
The list of regretful franchises includes the New England Patriots, who traded out of the first round that year and selected safety Kyle Dugger with the No. 37 pick. The Pats had reported interest in Hurts before the draft, but they failed to nab him before the Eagles did, and the rest is history.
Ahead of facing New England in Week 1, Hurts had some interesting words for his once-suitors.
It’s clear the QB isn’t impressed by the revisionist history several teams have tried to craft around his fall in the draft. He noted it “seems like there’s a lot of people” who wanted to take him before he was off of the board, but didn’t.
A number of franchises are hiding behind the excuse that he wasn’t available, but he fell into the back half of the second round. There were 52 picks made before him, and any one of those could’ve acquired for the right price. If a coaching staff really believed in his talent, they would’ve moved mountains to make sure he didn’t slip away.
Philadelphia gets the praise for ultimately stopping Hurts fall, and that’s partly deserved. However, seeing what Hurts has become, the Eagles were extremely lucky to get another chance to select him after taking Jalen Reagor in the first round. Imagine how much worse that draft could’ve turned out.
Thankfully, Hurts did land in Philly after all. He’s shown the entire league what they missed out on, and he’ll have a chance to rub into the Pats’ faces even further on Sunday.
