The Eagles have pulled one over on fans — getting everyone excited with a major roster move then backtracking on it.

Everyone in Philly was excited when Arryn Siposs didn’t make the 53-man roster, suggesting he’d be replaced as the starting punter. But then the Eagles didn’t sign any of the punters they brought in for workouts.

And now, just days before our 2023 Week 1 kickoff against the Cleveland Browns, it’s clear that Eagles fans aren’t rid of Siposs yet.

This is a serious head-scratcher.

Siposs was straight up  awful in 2022. Pro Football Focus had him ranked 33rd among the 36 punters they graded, and you won’t find an Eagles fan out there who would argue that he deserved a better ranking.

Despite that, Siposs was somehow the only punter on the Eagles roster for all of training camp and the 2023 preseason. And if anything he looked even worse. PFF had him 41st among 42 graded punters in the preseason.

Plenty of replacement options became available, and Philly has passed on every single one of them.

We can only speculate about why. It’s not even like Siposs has been lights-out at practice to give the coaching staff reason to believe he’ll eventually turn things around in games. This also isn’t one of those situations where a coaching staff holds onto someone for longer than deserved because they’re being stubborn about a wasted draft pick. He was undrafted, and signed in 2021 after being cut by the lions.

I can’t imagine the answer is that the Eagles’ punting game is so complex that we need someone familiar with the system. And even if that were somehow the case, it wouldn’t explain why they didn’t bring someone in to learn the system in training camp.

Siposs isn’t going to be make-or-break very often for the Eagles this year, but over the course of the season a poor punting performance will absolutely have an impact. And when you’re a Super Bowl hopeful team, one or two mistakes can be the difference between going all the way and a potential early playoff exit.

It’s going to be frustrating to see Siposs on the field against the Patriots on Sunday, but fans will just have to hope he can either turn it around or that he struggles so badly that the Eagles are finally willing to replace him.

Whatever Siposs does at least won’t impact the $200 bonus or $100 discount on NFL Sunday ticket you can claim from FanDuel.
