We don’t need to see an official Week 1 depth chart to know most of the Eagles’ starters for Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots. Returning most of the lineup that won Philly the NFC last year, there weren’t a lot of starting jobs up for grabs this offseason.

But one key question mark does exist: who will start at safety alongside Reed Blankenship? Nick Sirianni was asked about it on Tuesday, but it looks like he’s going to keep that one a secret for as long as possible.

The safety battle was one of the most interesting all through training camp, and even with one step (releasing K’Von Wallace) taken toward establishing a starter, this is still wide open.

There are cases to be made for all three options, too.

Terrell Edmunds is a seasoned vet with 75 starts across five NFL seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was brought in as a free agent to compete for this job, no question.

Sydney Brown probably has the inside track at being the long-term answer at the position, though. Edmunds only got a one-year contract, and Philly spent a third-round pick on Brown. He’s also really impressed in the preseason.

Then there’s Justin Evans — a wild card in the contest. A former second-round pick, injuries kept Evans from playing a single game between the 2018 and 2022 seasons, and he didn’t look great in his return for the Saints last year. But he had an outstanding preseason and training camp.

If you twist my arm to make a prediction, I’ll say Edmunds gets the Week 1 start, but by season’s end we’ll have seen Brown make the most starts of the trio.

Coaches tend to lean toward veterans early in the year, and Edmunds has the experience and track record to get the early nod here — especially against a Patriots team that has a tendency to exploit unprepared young players.

We can still expect Brown to rotate into the lineup and play a significant number of snaps though, and it shouldn’t be long before he claims his spot in the lineup and doesn’t look back.

The Eagles defense should be a nightmare for Mac Jones no matter who gets the nod at safety, and this is a fun spot for Philly fans in Week 1.
