Jerry Jones isn’t coping well with the Philadelphia Eagles’ success. Jalen Hurts lives in his head rent-free, so much so that he has impacted the Dallas Cowboys’ contract negotiations with Dak Prescott.

Jones spoke in a press conference on Monday about the Cowboys’ quarterback situation, even going as far as to reveal that he had hoped to draft Hurts. Only Hurts haunts Jones so badly that Jerry wasn’t even willing to say the name of the best quarterback in the NFC East.

This is wild. First of all, Jerry is obviously not talking about Marcus Mariota, Tanner McKee or Ian Book. And he knows full well what Jalen Hurts’ name is.

He likes Hurts well enough to be willing to admit he wishes he had him over Prescott, but he can’t even bring himself to say Hurts’ name. That’s a huge piece of real estate Hurts is occupying in Jerry’s brain, even when the Cowboys have all sorts of drama swirling around the upcoming season.

This is likely Jerry’s effort to posture publicly to get an upper hand in ongoing negotiations around Dak’s contract (2024 is the final season of his current deal), but he may have gone too far this time.

Dak’s no stranger to earning all kinds of well-deserved criticism, but this has gotta hit differently.

Prescott knows he’s no Jalen Hurts. It’s not a secret to him that the best quarterback in the NFC East is on his biggest rival. But it’s not like all he needs is the right motivation to somehow become better than Hurts. And hearing the team’s owner and GM publicly throw you under the bus like this? That just can’t feel good.

Can you imagine a reversed situation where Prescott held a press conference and told reporters how much he wished Howie Roseman was the GM instead of Jones?

This situation is an absolute mess for the Cowboys. Trading for Trey Lance already showed how desperate they are, and comments like this from Jones will only make things worse.

Meanwhile, Hurts and the co. will happily go ahead and continue to set an example for Dallas to be jealous of.

Making it further than the Cowboys is fun. Beating them heads up is a blast. But tearing apart their franchise from the inside? Even Philly fans didn’t know they had that much power over Dallas.
