5. Josiah Scott

Greedy Williams was an early cut from the Eagles cornerback room and Zech McPherson was waived with an injury designation, but that still isn’t enough to mean there’s room for Josiah Scott on the final 53.

A slot corner with the flexibility to play safety can be the kind of versatility that NFL teams covet, but Scott doesn’t do either job well enough to warrant a roster spot.

He was pretty bad when called upon in relief of Avonte Maddox in 2022, which led to us moving a safety into the slot rather than playing Scott.

Since then, Scott hasn’t shown enough this preseason to suggest that a similar backup plan wouldn’t be the right answer if Maddox were to get hurt in 2023. Sydney Brown played some slot in college, Terrell Edmunds has some NFL experience in the slot and we’re deep enough at safety to accommodate a similar shift if needed in 2023,

As a former fourth-round pick who’s already earned some starts it can feel like a waste to let Scott walk, but it’s just not worth clinging to hope on some outside chance that he suddenly puts it all together.

As a Super Bowl contender, the Eagles need backups who can comfortably fill in without leaving a big hole in the lineup. If they can’t do that, then they better have sky-high upside.

Scott doesn’t check either box.
