3. Trey Sermon

Here’s an easier pill to swallow. I’ve had Trey Sermon as a cut candidate since training camp started.

You also got the spoiler that he’d be on my final list of cuts when I put out my Week 1 running back depth chart projection.

Sermon almost never saw the field in his first season with the Eagles in 2022, and even though we lost Miles Sanders this offseason, it’s not going to be any easier in 2023. If anything, replacing Sanders with two additions makes it even harder.

Sermon’s roster spot already became uncertain when we signed Rashaad Penny in March, and trading for D’Andre Swift in April was all but the nail in the coffin. Suddenly he was up against a pair of guys the Eagles liked enough to go out and get while also having to try to overcome two incumbents who had already beaten him out last year in Boston Scott and Kenneth Gainwell.

Scott is probably the best candidate for Sermon to make it over, but his familiarity with the offense as a veteran presence in this locker room combined with his special teams contributions makes Scott the easier pick to hold on to.

Could the Eagles carry five running backs on the roster? Maybe, but Sermon really hasn’t shown anything to warrant that in a long time. His one “breakout” game is almost two years old now, and he’s going to have a tough time making any 53-man roster.
