2. Derek Barnett

After agreeing to a contract restructure this offseason, Derek Barnett likely saved himself from being a camp cut. The writing still appears to be on the wall regarding a split, however, and this would be the perfect time to do it.

Barnett’s simply fallen out of favor in Philadelphia as his play has declined. The former first-round pick burst onto the scene as a rookie, racking up 5.0 sacks for an Eagles defense that eventually went on to win the Super Bowl.

He kept things going through the 2020 season, but then experienced a sharp drop-off in 2021, posting only 2.0 sacks. An ACL tear then cost him almost the entire 2022 season, putting him on shaky footing in terms of his roster spot. His reputation for not being the greatest teammate and starting several practice fights over the years certainly doesn’t his standing.

All of that said, franchises in need of a veteran EDGE help will consider adding Barnett at the very least. The 2019 and 2020 campaigns, which saw him post a combined 12.0 sacks and 38 QB hits, show he’s very capable of producing.

On a reduced, incentive-focused contract, Barnett wouldn’t cost another team much to kick the tires. He’s only entering his age-27 season, and has a championship experience. A change of scenery could be all he needs.
