5. Avonte Maddox

Having another defensive star on a very team-friendly deal is a key piece of the Eagles being able to afford such a loaded defense.

Avonte Maddox signed his extension in November 2021, when he hadn’t even finished a full bounce-back season after a truly terrible 2020.

That timing worked out perfectly for the Eagles, who didn’t have to pay the full price that Maddox would ultimately prove worthy of by finishing out 2021 strong and then turning in another great season in 2022.

Maddox was terrific last year, forcing a career-best 77.3 passer rating when thrown at and only being targeted 37 times in coverage. For context, a passer rating of 77.3 would’ve ranked 32nd among qualifying quarterbacks last season, placing him between Davis Mills (78.8) and Kenny Pickett (76.7).

Making just $14.5 million over the next two seasons, Maddox will remain a bargain as long as we don’t suddenly see his play regress to the lows it hit in 2020.
