5 Most Underpaid Eagles Heading Into the 2023 Season
2. DeVonta Smith
Wide receiver contracts have completely blown up over the last couple of offseasons, and it hasn’t just been for top-end players.
Sure, Tyreek Hill’s $30 million per season is wild, but even guys like Christian Kirk ($18 million), Corey Davis ($12.5 million) and Michael Gallup ($11.5 million) are cashing in.
Then there’s DeVonta Smith, still playing on his rookie deal and making a shade over $5 million per season. Comparable veteran contracts include guys like DeVante Parker ($5.4 million) and Kendrick Bourne ($5.0 million).
So it doesn’t even matter where you rank Smith among the league’s top wide receivers right now. Even a Cowboys fan isn’t going to pretend he’s actually the 45th-best wideout in the league like his contract suggests.
This huge discrepancy is part of why wide receivers are getting drafted so highly as of late. If you get a good young one, you can have a premier player at the position locked in on a $10 million or more discount.
