The Eagles came out of Thursday’s preseason game against the Browns with several injury concerns. Stud rookie Nolan Smith was the biggest name to leave the contest, but Philadelphia also saw three contributors carted off of the field, including cornerback Zech McPhearson.

The latest update on McPhearson is gut-wrenching news.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports the backup CB suffered a torn Achilles against Cleveland. This will end his 2023 campaign before it even started.

McPhearson’s injury deals a big blow to reigning NFC Champs. He is one of Philly’s most important backups, suiting up in 33 games over the past two seasons. The former fourth-round pick not only provides nice insurance at cornerback, but he’s also a primary contributor on special teams, where he’s played most of his snaps since entering the league and even earned Player of the Week honors last season.

McPhearson has appeared in each of Philadelphia’s four recent postseason games as well, showing the coaching staff’s legitimate trust in him.

This now creates a big hole in two different areas for the Eagles. The cornerback competition suddenly becomes a lot more interesting for the likes of Kelee Ringo, Greedy Williams and Eli Ricks. The former’s roster spot is safe as a 2023 fourth-round pick, but he suddenly now has a path to actual playing time. Williams is regarded by most as a potential cut candidate, but Nick Siranni could opt to keep him around considering his past starting experience.

Ricks, meanwhile, may also be in the 53-man conversation following McPhearson’s injury. He’s by no means safe on the roster as an undrafted free agent, though the Eagles could opt to take a chance on the raw CB prospect and keep him around if shows enough to end camp.

The ripple effects of McPhearson’s injury will certainly be felt. This is just one early hurdle in the way of a return trip to the Super Bowl, but Howie Roseman surely has a move up his sleeve to solidify the roster.
