Suspicious Haason Reddick Injury Update Sheds Doubt on Return Timeline
Eagles fans collectively held their breath when Haason Reddick went down with an injury in Monday’s joint practice against the Browns. Those concerns were put at ease a bit, however, when it was revealed that he wasn’t expected to miss any regular season time.
A new update emerged on Thursday, however, and while that promise of “back in time for the regular season” remains, things are starting to get a little fishy.
Haason Reddick Injury Update
I get that Rapoport says that this is to make sure he’s ready for the start of the season, but there’s reason to be suspicious of that.
This wouldn’t be the first time that Rap put out a report that turned out to be inaccurately optimistic. I’m not going to speculate on the whys behind those reports, but it’s certainly been a trend in the past.
Our September 10 opener is also only about three and a half weeks away. Like Rapoport, I’m not a doctor, but the commonly cited timeline for returning from thumb surgery is four to six weeks. It’s obviously not going to be as hard for a linebacker as it might be for a quarterback, but the risk of re-injury still exists.
Reddick has never missed a game in his career due to injury (only once with COVID), and I’m not doubting his toughness or ability to play through pain. What I am doubting is having a player return too early from surgery and risking re-injury. We also have a short week immediately after that opener.
That’s especially tough to stomach in Week 1. If we’re talking about a playoff game or a must-win contest down the stretch that’s one thing, but there’s no need to risk an entire year of issues this early, especially when our matchup is an incredibly winnable one against the Patriots that sees the Eagles coming in as a big favorite.
Nolan Smith looks well on his way to being able to fill in admirably for Reddick, and my money is on Reddick not making his season debut until Thursday Night Football at home against the Vikings in Week 2.
