As bits and pieces of the 2023-24 NBA schedule begin to leak, 76ers fans are interested in seeing which primetime matchups the team draws for this upcoming season. This Eastern Conference contender is sure to garner several big games during the year, especially with the reigning MVP in Joel Embiid ready to defend his crown.
Thursday night, it was revealed the Sixers will be playing on arguably the biggest day of the regular season.
Shams Charania of the Athletic reports the 76ers and Heat are one of the NBA’s five Xmas matchups. Philadelphia is slated to head on the road on Dec. 25 to face the current Eastern Conference champions at the Kaseya Center.
Per Charania, 76ers-Heat would be the second game of the day after Bucks-Knicks. Meanwhile, Celtics-Lakers, Mavericks-Suns and Warriors-Nuggets follow to conclude the holiday.
It’s no surprise to see Philadelphia chosen for yet another Christmas Day game. The 76ers played the Knicks in New York last season, emerging with a 119-112 victory. That marked Philly’s 33rd time suiting up on Christmas; the Sixers have gone 19-14 all-time on the holiday, including two straight wins.
After losing the season series last year to Miami, this is a chance for the 76ers to exact revenge. The Heat 2-1 against Philadelphia during the 2022-23 campaign, while the Sixers’ only win against their conference foes came in March (surprisingly without Joel Embiid in the lineup).
If Philly is to truly take the next step as a contender, it needs to take care of business against the East’s top competition. There’s no better way to make a case as a Finals threat than beating down the Heat while the entire NBA is tuned in.
