It’s hard to really nail down exactly what makes a particular play in sports a truly “beautiful” one. There are great plays that are not beautiful. Nobody called a Tim Duncan bank shot “gorgeous”, even if it went in just as often as a Kobe fadeaway. Ken Griffey Jr’s swing would’ve been admired even if he only hit half as many career home runs as he did. There’s a particular aesthetic quality to  some players’ games that it would take a philosopher wiser than myself to really capture the essence of.

But I do know the Phillies have two players capable of such beauty: Bryce Harper and Trae Turner.

And it was just our luck that we saw two such occurrences in the same inning on Tuesday night. Harper with a stunning swing on a home run and Turner with his beautiful smooth slide into home scoring a run later in the inning. Check ’em out:

Bryce’s power has been a little lacking this season, but he’s picked it up in a big way now, going yard twice in his last four games. He’s also now recorded extra-base hits in three of his last four.

This one gave us a lead over the Nationals in the second half of a doubleheader, and the Phillies offense continued the rally to grow the lead.

Trea legged out a single with some serious speed. Then he stole second. Then he scored from second on a base-hit, crossing the plate with his trademark smooth-as-silk slide. That’s exactly the kind of series of events that makes him so incredibly dangerous.

Ever since Phillies fans decided to stop booing Turner and go with some positive reinforcement instead, things have been incredible. Turner’s four straight games with extra-base hits make his longest streak as a Philly, and he’s got his batting average up to .240 this season on the back of a five-game hitting streak.

The Phillies are playing absolutely beautiful baseball right now, and it’s hard not to get excited about all the momentum being built as we get closer to the postseason.
