The Phillies need to stay poised throughout August if they hope to make the MLB playoffs. They currently occupy the National League’s second Wild Card spot with four teams sitting between half a game and 4.5 games behind them.

After general manager Sam Fuld was relatively quiet at the trade deadline, time will tell if his club’s roster is good enough to make some noise down the stretch. Philadelphia has a handful of important series to win this month and any shortcomings could seriously derail its postseason push.

Here’s a look at three series that the Phillies can’t afford to lose in August.

Phillies Must-Win Series in August

1. Phillies vs. Royals — Aug. 4-6

You don’t have to look too far for a must-win series as the Phillies are set to host the Kansas City Royals this weekend.

Some of you are likely wondering why a series against one of the MLB’s worst clubs is a must-win situation. It’s simple, though: Philadelphia needs the momentum.

Every win and loss against any team — whether they’re a contender or bottom-feeder — matters at this stage of the season. Losing any number of games to a beatable Royals club would be an unnecessary detriment to the Phillies’ postseason pursuit.

Thumping Kansas City would also be a good way for the team to get its mojo back. Philadelphia is only 10-9 since the All-Star festivities and needs to look like it belongs in the playoff race.

Decisively defeating Kansas City also gives Philly a chance to go on a solid winning streak. After this three-game series, the Phillies are set to host the lowly Washington Nationals for four contests. In other words, starting a winning streak at this time could be the difference between making or missing the playoffs.
