The 2023 NFL season is right around the corner, but that hasn’t stopped Eagles fans from looking ahead. After all, there are a handful of players that Philadelphia still needs to extend to avoid headaches next offseason.

The Eagles are poised to be Super Bowl contenders for years to come, but that can easily change if they can’t keep important players locked down. The last thing Howie Roseman needs is a setback after putting together the franchise’s best squad in years.

At the end of the day, it’s better for the Eagles certain extensions before they cause a distraction. Here’s a look at three players that Philadelphia must extend before the new season begins.

Next Eagles Contract Extensions

1. D’Andre Swift

The Eagles gave their backfield a boost by acquiring running back D’Andre Swift from the Detroit Lions back in April. Even though the former Georgia product has yet to play snap with his new teams, extending him now is a smart idea.

Yes, it’s risky extending a player before they even play a game, but the versatile 24-year-old is a proven commodity.

For starters, Swift is one of the best dual-threat RBs today. Over his first three NFL seasons, he’s racked up 1,680 rushing yards (364 carries) and 1,198 receiving yards (156 catches) with 25 total touchdowns in 40 career games.

Few rushers can be that productive on the ground and through the air.

He’s also set to become a free agent at the end of the 2023 season, so getting a deal done soon is optimal. We’ve seen this offseason just how disruptive running back negotiations have been across the league. Philly must do what it can to avoid a similar situation.

As it stands, Trey Sermon and Kenneth Gainwell are the only Eagles RBs under contract in 2024. In other words, losing Swift would set the team’s backfield back, further highlighting the importance of an extension.
