3. San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers’ QB situation is one of the more interesting ones. Their 2022 campaign was salvaged by “Mr. Irrelevant 2022” Brock Purdy, who stole the starting job by winning all five of his regular-season starts while throwing for nearly 1,400 yards with 13 TDs along the way.

Unfortunately, Purdy completely tore his UCL in the NFC Championship Game against the Eagles, leaving time to tell if he can pick up from where he left off. If, for some reason, the ex-Iowa State product doesn’t meet expectations, the next quarterbacks in line are Trey Lance and Sam Darnold.

The above QB pair hardly inspires confidence.  Lance has attempted just 56 passes since being the third overall pick two years ago while Darnold is, well, what he is at this point. He’s decent in short spurts but hardly someone that can be relied on week-to-week.

While Carson Wentz wouldn’t guarantee a title for the Bay area, he’d have a chance to thrive in Kyle Shanahan’s system. The 49ers offensive line is a QB’s best friend and that’s not even to mention the elite threats that’d be at his disposal (Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, etc.).

After the 49ers found a way to succeed with Purdy, the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, as a rookie, I have faith that they can make things work with Wentz if times become that desperate.
