Phillies target #3: Reyes Moronta (Arizona Diamondbacks)

The last player on our list is a name that would fly under the radar to most casual baseball fans. But if you are a fan of late-night west coast baseball like I am, you are familiar with Reyes Moronta.

The hard-throwing, right-handed reliever has a powerful fastball that routinely sits north of 95 mph mixed with a nasty slider. He would be a sneaky addition to many bullpens around the league. Moronta has spent the entirety of his career in the National League West, with stints playing for the Giants, Dodgers, and Diamondbacks.

The short and stocky right-hander is typically a fan favorite, as he has a bit of an unorthodox look on the mound. He stands at 5 foot 10 and weighs in around 265 pounds, but don’t let his stature fool you, as he has been giving opposing hitters fits for years.

For his career, Moronta has held opponents to a slash line of .184/.293/.315, and he has a career strike-out rate of 28.1%, which sits well above the league average from 2022, which was 22.6%.

The biggest thing that has impacted Reyes Moronta on the mound is the consistent ability to throw strikes. Walks have bitten him quite often throughout his career, with his career walk rate sitting at 12.8%. The league average walk rate in 2022 sat at 8.5%, so there is room to improve for the veteran.

Ultimately, there is risk involved with any of the players on this list; that is why they were let go by their respective teams. However, in the right situation, all three of these players could help a contending team in 2023. The Philadelphia Phillies could very well be that team, and only time will tell if they decide to kick the tires on any of these players.
