Trea Turner is the best available candidate

One could devote an entire piece to reasons why Trea Turner is the obvious choice for the Philadelphia Phillies. That is not this piece that comes later (he said in his Bane voice), but we will still touch on the highlights.

The first is that Trea Turner is one of the top free agents on the market. He’s, of course, not ahead of the judge, but is certainly a top-three player on the open market this year — top five at absolute worst.

Trea Turner is coming off of a year that saw him not only hit for 20+ home runs, not only collect 100+ runs, and not only steal 20+ bases but also reach the 100 RBI mark, a career-best by 23 RBIs. His average may not have been as high as last season (.328 and .298, respectively), but doing what he did as a fringe .300 hitter cannot be understated. Then there’s the defensive ability.

Yes, Turner did have 16 errors this season, a career-high, but he has historically graded out as a plus defender. He won’t be confused with Jimmy Rollins, but he doesn’t have to be. He’s more than a serviceable defender who is one of the top, if not the best, shortstops in the entire game.
