The Philadelphia Eagles are 5-0 and off to their best start since 2004 (a year that saw them reach the Super Bowl). As they approach the trade deadline, it’s expected that, should they make a deal, the team would be buyers as they continue their push toward a hopefully deep postseason run.

While things have been quite sunny in Philadelphia, the picture in Carolina has been much bleaker for the Panthers. The team fired their head coach of just over two years, Matt Rhule, after starting the season off 1-4. Since then, reports of the team considering trading their superstar running back Christian McCaffrey and wideout Robbie Anderson (already dealt to the Cardinals) have .

McCaffrey and Anderson may be the only Panthers reportedly available, but there have been plenty of rumors surrounding young edge rusher Brian Burns. The shame of it is, however, that while Brian Burns is a dream trade target for Philadelphia, it’s nothing more than a dream as the Panthers will almost certainly refuse to make him available.

Acquiring Brian Burns is no more than a dream for the Philadelphia Eagles.

It may not be what many want to hear on this subject, but the odds of a team trading away a 24-year-old pass-rusher who is averaging over half a sack a game. Howie Roseman and the Eagles can only help what they can help, and simply put, Carolina would be foolish to part ways with a cornerstone, not just their defense, but their entire team.

Burns is young, talented, and under contract ($16 million next season). Even if the Panthers were so inclined to trade him away, the cost would be incredibly high, perhaps even similar to the Khalil Mack trade in 2018.

Instead, expect Philadelphia to target affordable veterans like Jerry Hughes, currently with the Houston Texans, to bolster the pass rush.

It’s likely that the Philadelphia Eagles will pursue one or more players by the trade deadline. It’s also likely that they will pursue an edge rusher. It is, unfortunately, unlikely for one of the players they land to be Brian Burns.
