Philadelphia Phillies: 3 players who have earned a postseason roster spot
By Tim Boyle
2) The Philadelphia Phillies need Sam Coonrod in the bullpen
Sam Coonrod isn’t the best relief pitcher the Phillies have. However, when we look at his two seasons with the club, he’s a guy with some nice potential.
Coonrod missed most of the year due to an injury. Since returning to big league action, he has been a little wild but also effective. Compared to some of the other arms the Phillies could carry with them on the postseason roster, Coonrod feels like a better bet.
A pitcher like Nick Nelson won’t have as much of a purpose on the Phillies in the playoffs because of the available starters they can stack in the bullpen instead. Coonrod might not be all that much more superior to a pitcher like Nelson. But during his time with the Phillies, he has the better numbers.
Coonrod would slot in as possibly one of the last options for Rob Thomson to turn to. He’s behind the usual suspects to pitch the high-leverage innings. His purpose would be to get Philadelphia three outs when the game isn’t tight or someone else is unavailable.
Whatever exact role they feel he could have, Coonrod can help round out the bullpen. He can secure this idea with a strong finish to the regular season.
