Philadelphia Phillies: 3 players who shouldn’t be on the playoff roster
By Tim Boyle
3) The Philadelphia Phillies should hand Bailey Falter’s roster spot to an extra hitter
There is an argument to make in favor of putting Bailey Falter on the postseason roster. He has started more regularly than Nelson and Sanchez this year. He has also seen himself summoned from the bullpen a handful of times. Falter is more of a starter whose time in the bullpen hasn’t been tested enough. Between him and even a guy like Noah Syndergaard coming in for the Phillies as a reliever, go with the guy who has pitched in the World Series before.
It’s not Syndergaard, Zach Eflin, or Kyle Gibson who should actually take Falter’s roster spot. Instead, the Phillies should look to carry an extra hitter.
Darick Hall would be a nice candidate for this. His time with the Phillies this year during the absence of Bryce Harper was quite productive. Having his left-handed bat available to pinch hit in favor of possibly Matt Vierling with the idea of using Brandon Marsh as the defensive replacement could be one way the Phillies can play chess.
Falter can become more valuable to the Phillies if they make it past the first round. Having a third lefty in the bullpen can come in handy. To start things off, Hall is a better choice.
A major component to building a postseason roster without these three guys would be to keep the pitchers healthy. It’s easier said than done. There are a few weeks left for the worst of the worst to happen. Hopefully, the IL stays empty.
