Rosters continue to change in a world post cutdown deadline — as they do every season. This is the case for the Philadelphia Eagles, as it is for every team, who have made multiple moves after the deadline. Most recently, the Eagles claimed former San Francisco 49ers running back Trey Sermon off waivers according the ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Sermon was selected by the 49ers just last season with the 88th pick and yet, found himself on the cutting room floor come the cutdown deadline this past Tuesday. According to John Lynch, the general manager of the San Francisco 49ers, there was just too much competition in their running back room this offseason, and someone would have to be the odd man out.

Using phrases like “He wasn’t ready to play like we felt we needed him” to describe Sermon and stating that UDFA Jordan Mason — who made the team over Sermon — “runs in our style,” which secured him a spot, San Francisco seems very confident in their decision, but one team’s waiver is another team’s waiver claim.

The Philadelphia Eagles have claimed running back Trey Sermon off waivers.

While San Francisco may be overflowing with running backs, Philadelphia has clearly seemed one off of an ideal situation. It’s not that the Eagles are not talented at that position but rather that three total backs is simply not ideal considering injury (Sanders) and inexperience (Gainwell), and most importantly, run style.

While Sermon is no more experienced than Gainwell, he’s another versatile that should help solidify the running game, especially in case of injury.

Admittedly, Trey Sermon disappointed in his rookie season, considering the hype. To his credit, Sermon averaged 4.1 yards per carry; however, he only rushed 41 times for a grand total of 167 yards.

With the Philadelphia Eagles, the hope is that Sermon could rediscover some of his tendencies that made him a day 2 pick in the first place. Behind the Eagles’ stout offensive line, it’s not hard to like his odds.
