The Philadelphia Phillies simply cannot get a win.

After 52 games missed, the Phillies announced the wonderful news that Bryce Harper would return at long last for the beginning of the series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Injuries have taken a major toll on the Phillies’ season. After missing their superstar for so long, missing second baseman Jean Segura for many games as well, and now having lost key relievers Corey Knebel and Seranthony Domínguez, the return of Bryce Harper was met with unbridled excitement.

The fans of Philadelphia would celebrate for a time. However, the joy would not last as mere hours later, it was announced that ace Zack Wheeler would be placed on the 15-day IL with right forearm tendinitis.

The Philadelphia Phillies have placed Ace Zack Wheeler on the 15-day IL.

Wheeler had not looked quite himself as of late. Over his last two starts, in particular, he pitched extremely out of character as he averaged an ERA of 7.94 between the two losses to the Mets.

It’s clear he’s been dealing with this discomfort for some time, so a bit of rest is clearly needed for Wheeler. Hopefully, by resting now, the Phillies Ace is able to return to form in time for the postseason.

If there is some good news about the situation, it’s that Wheeler’s placement is retroactive to August 22nd. That means that his return, in all likelihood, Wheeler will be available to return to the rotation as early as September 6th against the Miami Marlins.

That is the Philadelphia Phillies’ plan, at least according to general manager Dave Dombrowski. MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki stated that Dombrowski believes Wheeler’s injury to not be overly serious but that it’s wiser to “knock it out now” as opposed to letting the injury linger.
