As Week 2 of the NFL preseason approaches, the Philadelphia Eagles roster continues to train and compete while the front office continues to make moves to improve the team. One such move was made today as the team traded away J.J. Arcega Whiteside to the Seattle Seahawks for defensive back Ugo Amadi.

Since he was first drafted in 2019, J.J. Arcega-Whiteside’s time with the Philadelphia Eagles has been anything but positive. The former wideout, now tight end, from Stanford, struggled early and often to make a strong impression; however, despite his best efforts, he came up short.

It became clear early on that Arcega-Whiteside would not meet — let alone succeed — expectations worthy of the 57th overall pick. This season, there were even questions of if he would make the roster at all. While the expectation was likely that Arcega-Whiteside would not make the Week 1 roster, trading him away from another player, let alone an experienced one who solves depth problems.

After an unceremonious beginning to his career, J.J. Arcega-Whiteside’s time with the Philadelphia Eagles is over after being traded to the Seattle Seahawks.

In return, the Eagles are receiving safety Ugo Amadi. After being drafted in the fourth round of the same 2019 draft as Arcega-Whiteside, Amadi went on to start 12 games in 3 seasons for Seattle, including 7 just last season.

Amadi has not exactly had a stellar career, but the Eagles effectively got something for a net nothing. With the safety unit still looking relatively weak for Philadelphia, Amadi has a chance to compete, likely against recent addition Jaquiski Tartt or young safety K’Von Wallace for defensive snaps.

It’s a fresh start for both J.J. Arcega-Whiteside and Ugo Amadi, who were both in need such a change. Being able to move Arcega-Whiteside — for value, really — is an easy decision, one that Howie Roseman was wise to make.
