The Philadelphia Phillies roster purge continued on Thursday with Didi Gregorius becoming the latest veteran eliminated from the ball club. On the same week the team designated Jeurys Familia and Odubel Herrera for assignment, the Phillies decided they’d send underperforming shortstop Gregorius into the free agent pool, too.

In his third year with the team, Gregorius has slashed .210/.263/.304 while playing subpar defense. He missed a large part of the year due to injuries and only managed to hit a single home run before his release.

He’ll leave the Phillies as a .230/.287/.384 hitter with 24 home runs and 113 RBI in 877 trips to the plate.

Phillies roster looks a lot different today than it did before the MLB trade deadline

The Phillies will hand the roster spot to Jean Segura who has been reinstated from the IL. They’re looking a lot different these days. Edmundo Sosa is going to take a spot on the bench and be a right-handed infield option for them behind Bryson Stott who should see a lot of time at shortstop with Gregorius now gone.

With Brandon Marsh in center field and Noah Syndergaard joining the rotation, Philadelphia added and subtracted from the major league roster in major ways. Some of those moves were, frankly, long overdue.

When Gregorius first joined the team ahead of what ended up as a productive 2020 season, he was one of many bigger name additions. He came after the more speculator 2018-2019 offseason that brought us Bryce Harper, J.T. Realmuto, Andrew McCutchen, and a few others. There were some signs the Phillies might have already reached by thinking Gregorius wasn’t the answer at shortstop. As time has gone on, those doubters have been proven correct.

The future for the Phillies at shortstop can include Stott or one of the free agents this offseason. It has been previously reported that they are viewed as a favorite to land Trea Turner in free agency.

Until then, expect Stott to start every game against a right-handed pitcher. When a southpaw starts, Rob Thomson may choose to go with another option.
