3. The Phillies front office showed they are willing to admit to their mistakes

Want to know why it feels real good to be a Phillies fan today? Odubel Herrera and Jeurys Familia are no longer with the team. They were each designated for assignment as a result of the trade deadline additions they made.

Herrera leaves the Phillies with a .238/.279/.378 slash line and as one of the more enraging Phillies players in recent seasons. His domestic violence issues were the final straw for many fans. And yet the Phillies still re-signed him this winter.

Familia had his own domestic violence problem in the past so when the Phillies inked him to a deal over the winter, it felt like a beating to our own morality. He’ll depart the Phillies with a 6.09 ERA in 34 innings of work. Clearly, the experiment with him was a waste of time. His fading performance as a member of the New York Mets in recent seasons was just a preview of what he would turn into with Philadelphia this year.

Making big trades is one way the front office can earn the faith of fans. Eating the money owed to a pair of unpopular players is yet another. The team finally wised up and bid Herrera and Familia a farewell after a few bad months.
